A Smaller, Masked Staging Dataset

The Challenge:

A full production dump brings more rows and sensitive values than a debugging task needs. Define the test case before choosing the subset.

The Architecture Solution:

Filter relevant orders, include their related customer and item rows, and approve a masking rule or an explicit Not PII decision for every copied column. Review environment-specific overrides after masking.

Topology Pipeline
  1. 1Production database with least-privilege source access
  2. 2Local dbmigrate review, row selection, and in-memory masking
  3. 3Staging database with approved target permissions

Test Data Across a Controlled Boundary

The Challenge:

Developer environments can have different access controls and retention rules from the source. A useful test dataset needs an explicit privacy review.

The Architecture Solution:

Identify sensitive fields and indirect identifiers, choose approved replacement rules, and review the resulting dataset before copying it. Masking alone does not establish anonymisation or regulatory compliance.

Topology Pipeline
  1. 1Restricted source database accessible to the approved workstation
  2. 2Local masking rules and documented privacy review
  3. 3Test target with access and retention controls

An Expected-State Database for CI Drift Checks

The Challenge:

Comparing two environments without a defined baseline can confuse expected release changes with out-of-band edits. Decide which state should be authoritative.

The Architecture Solution:

Build an expected-state database from reviewed migration history. Compare it with the chosen target using dbmt, preserve the report, and route unexpected differences for review before deployment.

Topology Pipeline
  1. 1CI runner with network access and approved database credentials
  2. 2Expected-state database built with your existing migration tooling
  3. 3dbmt comparison against the selected target
  4. 4Review differences and configure the deployment gate in CI
